This morning we were going over Mark 12 and specifically the passage where the Sadducees try to trick Jesus with a question about marital relationships in heaven. Jesus answers that and then hits them with the real issue which is whether or not there is a resurrection at all. The Sadduccees denied that there was and also only followed the Torah as authoritative. So Jesus references a passage from the Torah and says:
Now as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
The emphasis is of course on the the fact that God is (present tense) the God of three people who are physically dead. However what was also pointed out is that God is also saying that same phrase of all those who have put their trust in Him. The thought of God saying, “I am the God of Todd Singletary” is ridiculously incredible to comprehend.
Next, one of the more influential books in my life has been Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper. Desiring God is offering it in audio form free here: http://bit.ly/3SKX4U
And speaking of books you should pick up Spirit Of the Rainforest. Fascinating read from an anthropological perspective as well as from a spiritual perspective.
